ABOUT THE PROJECT
The Wall – Berlinpinpin Edition is a custom wall artwork inspired by Pink Floyd’s album The Wall, created for Berlinpinpin, a street-food style Berliner kebab restaurant in Montpellier. The owners wanted to reinterpret the iconic Pink Floyd wall using LEDs and a trompe-l’œil effect, where the bricks appear broken to reveal an artwork inside.
I proposed using one of my illustrations, The Abyss Stares Back, a neo-Japanese composition of yokai with red eyes staring at the viewer. This illustration matched the project perfectly because The Wall is about what hides behind appearances, inner tension, and what stares back when barriers break. The yokai emerging from inside the wall echo this idea, transforming the wall into something alive, mysterious, and immersive while fitting the bold, underground identity of the restaurant.

CHALLENGES
The main challenge was achieving absolute precision. I had to measure the entire wall and each individual brick so the printed artwork would fit perfectly once installed. The trompe-l’œil effect required exact alignment to maintain the illusion of broken bricks and depth. Another challenge was choosing the right printing material and adhesive to ensure the artwork would last in a busy restaurant environment. Installation itself was also demanding, as the artwork needed to be cut, positioned, and applied flawlessly on site.
This project taught me how to create convincing depth and 3D optical effects in illustration. I learned how to take precise measurements using a laser tool and translate them accurately into Illustrator by working at exact scale. I gained practical knowledge about printing techniques, adhesive materials, and durability testing by doing small test prints before final installation. I also learned how to cut, align, and install large-scale wall graphics. Overall, it was a very enriching project, and the final artwork is still on display at Berlinpinpin in Montpellier, with the clients being extremely happy with the result.
